In his landscape “Path in the Rocks. Sosset-Les-Pins” we can see pines growing among huge stones and a path flowing into the distance. The painting is dominated by gray, green, brown, and black colors. The grayish-blue and reddish shades definitely enhance the palette and brighten up the space of the painting. Despite the figurative clarity and well-planned composition, there is not a sense of deliberate geometrization of the dimensions. Andre Derain retains the organic shapes of the objects, using lighter sub-tones to model their form. The “frame of reference” is constructed based on the linear perspective principle, with trees defining the verticals and the strip of land giving the horizontal.
