The still life Table by the Window was painted during the so called “Gothic” period in Derain’s career. The artist highlights and accentuates the shape of common objects appearing on the table by the window – a jar, a bottle, and other tableware. At the same time, the texture properties are discarded, and there is no material difference between the objects. The generalized landscape through the window brings to mind the backgrounds from early Renaissance art. It serves only to accompany the still life, which seems very much like Picasso’s cubism with its geometrical shapes. The stylized trees and black clouds may be evidence of Derain’s interest in the “primitive” art of Henri Rousseau. The linear rhythm of the composition and the powerful yet tempered color spots give the painting a passionate vibe, making it feel like an icon.
