Painted at Martigues, the Tree Trunks landscape belongs to the series of works where Derain rendered views of a pine grove in a somewhat conventional manner. There is nothing fauvist about this painting, no abundance of bright colors at all. The landscape seems to be covered with a grayish-silvery powder. The color palette is dominated by a combination of grayish-green-blue shades with a dash of ochre. The simplified shapes and the non-aerial perspective of the composition are reminiscent of Cezanne’s school. Despite the austere color palette and simplified composition, the “Tree Trunks” landscape gives an emotionally comprehensive impression.
