Andre Derain painted his landscape “Drying the Sails” in Collioure, and it was featured in the famous Salon d’Automne of 1905. To show the boats drawn up to the shore, the painter uses wide, vivid strokes and intensively contrasting colors, thus creating a dynamic scene.

About the light

The canvas showing between the strokes is perceived in the overall composition as the glaring light of the southern sun. There is no interplay of shadow and light. This effect is replaced by the collision of bright, contrasting color spots ranging across the entire spectrum. A flexible and explosive atmosphere, emphatic outlines, and an abundance of color are the main tools of fauvism.
