Saint Mary of Egypt

‘Saint Mary of Egypt’ is a Siberian folk icon of repentance. Usually, Maria was depicted in icons as nude or half-naked, but this artist turned away from this tradition and covered her with a cape. Mary’s folded hands symbolize the cross. Usually people hold their hands like this at the Holy Communion. With this gesture, the praying person shows that she trusts her life to Jesus and grieves for his Sacrifice in crucifixion.

Following the tradition, the artist portrayed Maria bareheaded. She had stayed under the withering sun for so long that her white hair seems dead and brittle. In Christian art, such an image means perfect repentance. For this reason, Saint Mary is a rare woman who was depicted with her head uncovered as a sign of absolution and the protection of the Lord. Many medieval legends dedicated to Mary Magdalene are based on the key scenes from Mary of Egypt’s biography.

In the 7th century, Sophronius of Jerusalem was the first to record the story of St. Mary of Egypt’s life; they Simeon Metaphraste wrote her canonical biography. The hagiographic story came from oral legends, initiated by the Jordanian monk Zosima, who met the hermit Mary in the desert in her declining years.

At the first meeting, the venerable woman told her story. She was born in Egypt and left her home for Alexandria at the age of 12. There, she indulged in fornication for almost two decades. Once, Mary wanted to go with pilgrims to Jerusalem for the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Mary did not think about holiness, she only looked for those with whom she could indulge in debauchery. In the Holy City, she attempted to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, but an invisible force did not let her in. At that moment, Mary realized her downfall. She stayed in the vestibule of the temple to pray in front of the icon of the Virgin, and then went back to the Temple. The power receded, and Mary was able to bow to the Life-giving Cross.

Full of gratitude, the harlot went out of the Temple and again turned to the Virgin Mary with a prayer. Then she heard a voice: “If you cross the Jordan, you will find blissful peace.” Mary was unable to disobey the Virgin and went over the Jordan to the desert, like many Christians did in the first centuries of the existence of new faith. These devotees had no monastic tonsure, but led an ascetic and righteous way of life, cleansed their hearts from passions and prayed for the whole universe.

Mary lived in the desert alone for 47 years. For the first 17, according to the number of years spent in fornication, she was tormented by memories of sins and passions. Upon meeting the naked Mary, Zosima handed her the half of his monastic robes, himation, and heard her request to return a year later to give communion to her. By the second meeting, Mary of Egypt became a saint: the elder Zosima saw her cross the Jordan by water, and when she prayed, she rose into the air. A year later, Zosima returned to their first meeting place, but no longer found the sainted alive.
