The Holy Cross

Small pectoral cross. It belongs to the first type of crosses the upper part of which depicts the God of Sabaoth (God the Father), the dove (God the Holy Spirit) and the abbreviation I Н Ц И in the title of the Golgotha Cross.

This Holy Cross was made during the period when copper crucifixes were a trend. Pomorye craftsmen made them bypassing the ban of the authorities, so that anyone could pray. People always wore cross pendants with them, on makeshift woven cords or chains.

In the XVII century, Nikon became the Moscow patriarch. He imposed reforms in the Orthodox Church and brought Russian books and rites in accordance with the Greek canons. Those reforms had their opponents who were later called Old Believers. Due to disagreement and persecution, they were forced to move to the outskirts of cities or to flee into the forests.

The Church dissent led to a divergence in tradition. Around the 18th century, there were two types of Orthodox crosses: New Believer and Old Believer crosses. The former had laconic images and a minimum of details and decorations. The latter, in addition to the main image, had decorative features such as branchy ornaments, stripes, dots and triangles. A distinctive feature of Pomorye crucifixes was the use of colored enamel: yellow, green, blue or gilded.

All Crucifixes, regardless of their belonging to the old or new churches, fell into two conditional types. The ‘new’ crosses had a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, depicted over the head of the crucified Jesus Christ. On the ‘old’ crosses, there was no dove.

This Crucifix refers to the second type. Jesus Christ is depicted in a halo with a cross inscribed in it. Above him is God the Father, or Sabaoth, a symbol of Christ’s acceptance to heaven. The Savior’s open palms have a convex inscription which says ‘IC XC’, so his name was abbreviated on the icons. On the upper crossbar of the cross, a prayer written in six lines is visible.
Since the 18th century, eight-pointed crosses, to which the Crucifix made by the unknown master also refers, started to become more complicated, as side plates were added to them. Usually they depicted paired figures: Our Lady and St. Martha, or John the Theologian and the martyr Longinus the Centurion. Our Lady is the mother of Jesus Christ, who mourns his fate on earth.

In Orthodoxy, the cross is the most common symbol. It was hung over home icons, over the entrance to houses or bathhouses, over the altars. Crucifixion was used to bless newly-weds, to award priests and to protect people from ailments.
