Saint Nicholas of Mozhaysk

Nicholas the Wonderworker or Saint Nicholas is one of the most revered personage in Christianity. The Sanctifier was born in Asia Minor in the 3rd century A.D. — today the town of Patara is in the Turkish territory. In his childhood, he assisted his uncle, the bishop, during church services. After being ordained as a priest, Nicholas gave away the wealth he had received from his parents to the needy. Later on, the Sanctifier became the archbishop of the ancient Lycian city of Myra and became famous due to his decency, gentle spirit and wonders. He used payers to relieve the city from fierce hunger; he saved wrongfully convicted from execution; and he forecasted the future many times.

An unknown author created the icon Saint Nicholas of Mozhaysk in the 18th-19th centuries. Most likely, the author was an old-believer — this conclusion is based on the Not-Made-By-Hand Image of Our Savior on the top. The painters used the same manner to depict St. Nicholas of Myra and later on — St. Nicholas of Zaraysk.

The icon portrays Nicholas the Sanctifier with a sword holding a church in his hands. He is dressed in a phelonion — the priest’s robe. Our Savior and the Mother of God are depicted on both sides of St. Nicholas’ nimbus holding out the Gospel Book and the pallium. This characteristic feature of the Sanctifier’s iconography is related with the miracle at the Nicene Council in 325 described in the hagiography.

At the Council, the head of the philosophical school heresiarch Ariy claimed that Jesus Christ was created by God the Father, but is not coessential with Him. Nicholas of Mozhaysk got so angry that slapped Ariy on his cheek in the heat of the debate. Such physical abuse was considered a sin, and the Sanctifier was deprived of the lawn sleeves. The hagiography says that Christ himself and the Mother of God showed in the sleep of the influential participants of the Council and pointed at their incorrect decision. After that, Nicholas received his priesthood back.
According to Christian canons, it was forbidden to portray the Saints in full length. However, the icon painter was able to bypass this — and another event described in the hagiography influenced that. In the 14th century, the ton of Mozhaysk was laid siege by Tartars. The citizens prayed and a miracle happened: formidable Nicholas the Wonderworker appeared in the sky above the cathedral. In one hand he was holding a sparkling sword ready to behead the enemies, and in the other — the town protecting it from the attack. The enemies were scared and fled away. Grateful citizens carved the figure of St. Nicholas in full length on the gates of the cathedral. Since then, to commemorate the miraculous escape of the town of Mozhaysk, icon painters started to depict Saint Nicholas the same way.

After saving the city in 1302, people remembered Nicholas as a hero. The sword and the town of Mozhaysk became the signature features of this icon, they make the figure of the Wonderworker resemble a city emblem. The depiction in full length reminds about the origin – the monumental wooden sculpture on the gates.

Nicholas of Mozhaysk died about 345 and was buried in the Lycian city of Myra. His memorial days are celebrated on December 6, July 29 and May 9. In the Julian calendar, they are December 19, August 11 (the Sanctifier’s birthday) and May 22 (the date of translation of the Relics).
