Nikolay Alexeyevich Nekrasov developed the idea of publishing his works in the form of a series of books that would be accessible, understandable and affordable to ordinary people. For this purpose, he tried to establish ties with Moscow lubok publishers, but they viewed Nekrasov as a competitor and declined his proposal for publication.

Nikolay Alexeyevich decided to turn for help to the publisher Ivan Aleksandrovich Golyshev from the Mstyora sloboda, Vyaznikovsky uyezd, Vladimir governorate. Nikolay Alexeyevich assumed all the costs of printing the books and refused the income from sales.

On March 28, 1862, Nekrasov wrote to Golyshev,

I send you 1500 copies of my poems, intended for the people. On the back of each book is the price — 3 kopecks for a copy — so I would not want the books to be sold at a higher price: so that of the 3 kopecks one came to your benefit, and two in favor of ofenya book-peddlers — thus, the book will cost three kopecks, not more.

It is interesting that Mikhail Yevgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin was among the voluntary distributors of “The Red Books” series. In a letter to Ivan Ivanovich Panayev on May 11, 1863, he noted,

Do you have the first and second edition ‘The Red Books’ by Nekrasov? If you do, send me 30 copies of each.

The first book of 1861 contained Nekrasov’s poem “Korobeiniki”, the second book of 1863 included his poems “The Forgotten Village”, “The Gardener”, “The City Old Horse”, “The Schoolboy”, as well as “The Bachelor Naum-Sorokodum” by Alexander Fomich Pogossky.

The publication of the issues came amidst the unrest in Russia following the abolition of serfdom in 1861. The third series was not published due to censorship prohibitions. Both the first and second editions are bibliographic rarities, few books have survived.

The popularity of “The Red Books” series is proved by the fact that since the mid-1870s the beginning of the poem “Korobeiniki” (“Oh, my crate is so full…”) and its fifth chapter were sung as folk songs.

Despite the failure with issuing “The Red Books”, Nekrasov continued to publish works in an accessible format. In 1870, the members of the Saint Petersburg youth group, which was engaged in the publication and dissemination of folk literature published Nekrasov’s poem “Grandfather Frost, Red Nose” with the poet’s permission.
