The same carpet style is visible in the second panel, Early Spring in the Country. Its palette is built around the combinations of pink, golden, and blueish subtones.

The painter is still searching for his own grand style, using his experience with Japanese art, which he appreciated greatly. He wrote about the “beauty of the works by the greatest Japanese woodcut masters, which are more reserved and have less color contrast”. The panel looks like a precious tapestry “inwrought” with many color spots. The panel looks even more decorative due to the fact that it has no sky.

Signac about Bonnard
#5
Signac, who once visited Bonnard’s exhibition, commented on his landscapes: “All subjects are interpreted freely, all of nature submits to the painter’s will. Nevertheless, life is rendered even more expressively than in paintings done from nature. The art works are painted from memories about something the painter knows very well. And it all looks very festive, lively, and spontaneous... You can appreciate these paintings from a distance and then come closer to delight in the fascinating colors”.
