De Vlaminck painted “A Stream” in La Jonchère, near Bougival, where he began living in 1906. During that period he was fascinated by Cezanne’s art and broke off from fauvism. This resulted in a monochromatic palette and more structured composition. His dynamic, dramatically intense painting can be described as “jerky.” He applies broad curly strokes and the landscape bristles up, revealing the artist’s inclination towards impressionism.
