“Summer in Normandy”

#2

In his landscape “Summer in Normandy”, Bonnard uses a fascinating palette of green, purple, and brownish shades, which he apparently synthesized in his studio instead of taking from nature. The paints themselves are remarkable, but even more so is the fact that you can feel the sultry summer air. As you gaze into the canvas, you will notice women sitting in armchairs, dogs hiding from the heat, and other minor details, but there is no impressionistic illusion in this artwork.

About the attitude toward color

#4
Bonnard’s painting is a kaleidoscopic alternation of spots that form objects when combined in a specific manner. This attitude toward color and spots reveals the artist’s fascination with Japanese art, which he became acquainted with at the Paris exhibition in 1890.

About the passion for Japanese art

#3
His friends called him Nabi the Japanese because of his passion for Japanese art. Bonnard borrowed some techniques from Japanese painting for his compositions. For example, he often placed silhouette spots on the sides of the canvas, leaving a wide empty space in the center.
