It was hard to imagine what kind of future Vasily Tropinin, a serf of Count Anton Münnich, who was later given to the landowner Irakly Morkov, could have had. Vasily Tropinin was born in 1776 in the village of Karpovo, Novgorod Governorate, and in his youth lived in Ukraine, in the Podolsk Governorate.

Tropinin painted portraits of his landowner and his family members, as well as his teenage son and other persons. Irakly Morkov, his owner, facilitated his studies at the Academy of Arts under Stepan Shchukin in 1798–1804. Later the artist recalled,

I studied a little… although I was very diligent at the Academy, but I learned everything in Little Russia: There I painted from life and without rest, I painted everything and everyone, and these works of mine seem to be the best of all I have created.

He produced many wonderful canvases later as well, including the famous portrait of Alexander Pushkin.

Vasily Andreevich was freed only in 1823, and soon after was awarded the title of academician. He settled in Moscow. In 1833, Tropinin was invited to teach a newly established public art class (later it became the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture).

An excerpt from the book “The History of Russian Art” by Tatyana Valerianovna Ilyina and Maria Sergeyevna Fomina says,

Tropinin lived a long life, and he was destined to find true recognition, even fame, to receive the title of academician and become the most prominent artist of the Moscow portrait school of the 1820s–1830s. Having started his path in Sentimentalism, although his manner was more didactic and sensitive than Borovikovsky’s Sentimentalism, Tropinin developed his own style of portrait painting. There is no romantic impulse of Kiprensky in his canvases, but they captivate with simplicity, artlessness, sincerity of expression, truthfulness of characters, and realistic depiction of details. <…> In his work, Tropinin chose to give naturalness, clarity, and balance to simple compositions of a half-length portrait image. He preferred a neutral background with few accessories.

Vasily Andreevich created many commissioned portraits. Among them are the paired portraits of the spouses of Nikolay Ivanovich and Maria Andreevna Belchenko painted in 1836.
