Север покорил художника необычайными красками. Он сумел уловить тончайшие цветовые оттенки в северной природе. Плывущие льдины при солнечном освещении, художник сравнивал с гигантским калейдоскопом, в котором картина менялась каждую минуту. Сложная игра освещения, богатство цветовых оттенков нашли отражение в этюдах. 

Из своих художественных экспедиций на Север художник привез более 250 этюдов, большинство из которых написаны на морозе.
