The artifact on display was discovered in 1987 in kurgan No. 10 of the Kobyakovsky burial site, which is located on the eastern outskirts of Rostov-on-Don. This burial belonged to a wealthy nomadic woman who was a member of Sarmatian aristocracy.
The social status of the deceased woman was exceptionally high. Alongside the nomad, a collection of amulets was found, most of them crafted from ornamental stones. Additionally, two carved stones, intaglios, were identified within the burial. Several items were located in the center of the tomb, including a bronze mirror, silver spoon, iron knife, and red paint.
In addition to the two wooden caskets with plaster coatings on the surface, the burial also contained an ornate lid, an iron ax, and a set of two incense burners, as well as a pot with a lid. An iron artifact with a long handle and two prongs lay on top of the pot. The other box contained a gold buckle and a glass cup. Around the casket were an additional set of incense burners, as well as a red-figure vessel in the shape of a ram, an iron knife, and a whetstone.
Other artifacts found in the burial included fragments of wooden containers with gold clips, as well as five bronze bells, likely serving as apotropaic objects, or amulets.
The openwork ring that was also discovered in the burial is dated to the 1st — early 2nd century CE, to the Sarmatian period. It is made of two rings connected by two thin intertwined gold wires. They are decorated with granulation in some places.
Rounded hoops are featured in the center of the ring. These are flattened into two planes, forming two flat settings in the shape of an elongated oval that are positioned one above the other. Two inserts made of light shades of beige and light gray pastes are fixed in the settings. They are framed by granulation, with an additional set of three granules soldered above and beneath the settings. Two hoops are soldered on top of each other on the reverse side, with a thickening in the center.
The ring is created using a sophisticated filigree technique and complemented by granulation — small golden granules.
