The exhibition “Treasures of the Don Steppes” is a hallmark of the Rostov Regional Museum of Local Lore.
The museum houses thousands of archaeological finds made of precious metals, dating from the Bronze Age to the Late Middle Ages, many of which are unique.
The Rostov Museum was the first provincial museum in Russia to establish the “Rare and Precious Exhibits Hall”, modeled after the Golden Storeroom at the Hermitage. It was opened in 1973. Over the past 47 years, the exhibition has undergone several transformations and additions, with many artifacts being shown for the first time.
Among the exhibits from the world’s cultural
heritage are items from the kurgan complex
“Five Brothers”, which is part of the Yelizavetovskoye necropolis from the
second half of the 4th century BCE. These include a Scythian
gorythos and a gold overlay decoration for a Scythian sword scabbard. The
centerpiece of the exhibition is a reconstructed kalathos, a female Scythian
headdress.
