The engraving “Millennium of Russia Monument” was made in lithographic technique by the architect and artist Viktor Hartmann, one of the founders of the Pseudo-Russian style. He began working on the architectural part of the monument immediately after graduating from the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts.
The monument was erected in Veliky Novgorod in 1862, in honor of the millennial anniversary of the calling of the Varangians to Rus. The initiator of the monument creation was Emperor Alexander II. The monument illustrates the history of Russia personified from the 9th to the 19th century. It brings together 129 historical figures, famous politicians, military men, heroes, artists, writers, and educators.
The authors of the project were sculptors Mikhail Mikeshin and Ivan Schroeder and architect Viktor Hartmann. The monument is a huge orb (symbol of the monarch’s power) standing on a pedestal. The inscription on the orb reads:
