An epic poem by Torquato Tasso (1544—1595) is based on the events of the First Crusade led by Gottfried of Bouillon, which culminated in the capture of Jerusalem and the foundation of the first Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem.

The book is one of the few examples of illustrated editions by the House of Bodoni. Giambattista Bodoni (1740—1813), famous for his typefaces, relied mainly on typographic art and rarely used anything else.
For this edition, Bodoni borrowed illustrations from a publication by François-Ambroise Didot (1784 - 1786) who came from the famous dynasty of French publishers. A French designer and engraver Charles-Nicolas Cochin (1715—1790) made steel engravings based on drawings by famous artists of that time.

The exhibited copies of the first and second volumes are decorated with watercolours by Yusupov’s serf artists: Egor Shebanin, Fedor Sotnikov, Mikhail Poltev and Fedor Tkachenkov (Tkachev). Engravings by Charles-Nicolas Cochin (1715—1790) and Hubert-François Gravelot (1699—1773) served as the templates. While decorating the book, the artists enlarged the original images, and added colour to the black and white engravings.
