The ‘New Atlas…’ is one of jewels of the golden age of cartography in the Netherlands, a work of many generations of cartographers, such as Gerard Mercator (1512—1594), Abraham Ortelius (1527—1598), and Jodocus Hondius (1563—1612). The magnificent atlas is the result of efforts of two relatives, Hendrik Hondius (1573—1650) and Jan Janson. They managed to create and publish the most accurate maps. Each of the engravings is painted by hand. The beauty of the edition is brought out by a meticulously selected colour scheme.
