The exhibition showcases spearheads of the Neolithic Age from the Novomultanskaya dwelling site. The monument is located not far from the Novy Multan village of the Uvinsky District of the Udmurt Republic. Excavations took place there in 1973–1974.
The Neolithic Age is a special period in the human history. It completed the Stone Age, when people used only stones, bones, and wood to make tools. At first, the Neolithic Age was described as ‘a polished stone era.’ During this period, ceramics were widely used for various purposes. People made ceramic vessels and utensils: spindle whorls, weights, and small statuary.
Agriculture and livestock breeding were developing during the Neolithic period. By that time, the population had grown and it was difficult to feed large settlements with hunting and picking. So, the ancient people started looking for new ways to feed the population. Instead of picking, people were cultivating fields and growing plant food. At the same time, new stone tools for soil cultivation, harvesting, grinding, and cutting plants appeared.
After switching to agriculture, people needed more raw materials to produce tools. The main rock was chalcedony, but people also used quartz rock, pitchstone, and shale rock. Apart from stones, people used other materials, like bones and horns, to manufacture the necessary tools.
Judging by numerous bone remains of wild animals at Neolithic dwelling sites, hunting was very successful. The main hunting weapons were bows of different size, arrows, and spears. They were used for hunting various animals. In the Middle and Late Neolithic Age, numerous large stone leaf-shaped spearheads were made, as well as bone spearheads. Thus, there were different types of spears. Archaeologists find bone arrowheads, particularly, arrowheads with flat points, which were used for hunting small fur-bearing animals.
The exposed spearhead with a long stem made of reindeer’s or elk’s horn was used for hunting bears, elks, and roe deer. Our ancestors were constantly improving their hunting tools and methods. They improved the power and speed of arrows and spears, their range and hitting accuracy.
