Another member of the Nabi art group, Jean-Edouard Vuillard, was known for his poetic perception of the world. Vuillard explores the daily routine with its happy moments of family life. His characters live a leisurely, quiet existence. Their universe consists of the indoors, garden square, or orchard. At the same time, his landscapes are also closed like interiors, and the indoor scenes seem to be connected with the plein air.

The palette of “In the Garden” is moderate. The artist avoids bright, noisy colors, giving his preference to grayish, greenish, and blue shades. The color of an unpainted carton, which is used as a canvas, works as an emphasis, standing out from the minimalistic palette. The female figures are naturally entwined in the space of the painting, adding a mood of silent concentration.
