Robert Rozhdestvensky
Short poems, long poems, essays
#5
The best poems and various texts in prose that Rozhdestvensky wrote in the forty years of his career are included in the book “Short poems, long poems, essays”. It also includes documentary prose — autobiography, essays, and articles. Poet’s friends and colleagues contributed as well by writing short essays and notes. In particular, the collection contains texts by writer Vasily Aksyonov, poet Bulat Okudzhava, literary critic Lev Anninsky and many others, who knew him during his life. His youngest daughter, Ksenia Rozhdestvenskaya, compiled the book; it was published in 2000, six years after his death.

Yevgeny Yevtushenko, another renowned poet of the 1960s, shared his memories of Rozhdestvensky:

Voznesensky came up with a metaphor, and to some extent it”s correct, although not entirely accurate. He said that the 1960s poets were all completely different, they embarked on very different life journeys, but got captured by robbers and tied to the same tree with the same ropes. Maybe, in my case with relation to Voznesensky, this is true. But it”s not the same with Robert and me. I don”t think our paths were so different. First, we had the same favorite poets. There was a tradition at the Literary Institute — a test of one”s integrity, in other words a “gut-check”, to test one’s knowledge of poems. We tested each other this way once and right away became friends with Robert. Absolutely. Because of the poems.

Writer Leonid Zhukhovitsky also wrote down his memories of the poet: “Rozhdestvensky was one of the brightest poets of the troubled era: the country saw the Devil”s face, but did not know where God was. When the prison was cracking and crumbling and the lie became obvious, people had no idea how to live with the new freedom, the soul refused to let the truth into itself. Both the disappointments and the illusions of the time were expressed with a rare sincerity in Rozhdestvensky”s poetry. His early poems were similar to self-hypnosis: love and friendship, conscience and honor were like buoys for him and allowed him to hold on, to survive. His poems also became buoys for numerous readers”.
