The Greek word for gospel — “Evangelium” — means “good news”. The Gospel is an early Christian work that describes the earthly life, teaching, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The book has a sacred meaning for all Christians, it is included in the New Testament — one of the two parts of the Bible. The good news is the coming of the Kingdom of God and the salvation of the human race, which was announced by Jesus.
By the 2nd century AD, the narratives of the life and teachings of Christ were formed into four canonical gospels, which contain the texts compiled by the four apostles: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These books are recognized as canonical and the most important in Christianity, so the obligatory reading of the “Gospel” is part of the divine services: the Divine liturgy, the festive matins (morning prayer), the Royal Hours and others.
The Gospel from the collection of the Museum Complex of Kuybyshev was printed by the Synod Printing House in St. Petersburg in 1911. The book was released in a single binding, which over time lost its original appearance and was torn in places. The top and back covers are made of cardboard and wrapped in light brown buckram.
In the center of the top cover is an image of an eight-pointed cross, which was originally embossed with gilding. Over time, the relief of the pattern was lost, the cross faded and became light-colored. Along the edges of the top and back cover is a frame with a relief floral ornament, which also faded and became flat.
The Gospels are typographically printed on thin white paper. The book contains 364 numbered pages of text in Church Slavonic. The font is black. At the top of each page is the chapter number and the title of the Gospel: according to Matthew, Mark, Luke or John.
An engraved ornamental headpiece is placed at the beginning of each Gospel. All chapters of the book begin with an ornate initial. There are no illustrations.
On the last page, the book metadata is printed: it indicates with whose support and participation the Gospel was released.
Judging by the seal inside the top cover, for some period the Gospel was kept in the library of a school in the Kainsky Uyezd — Ephremovsky Two-Grade School of the Kainsky Uyezd, the Tomsk Governorate.
