Due to the complexity of manufacturing and the high cost of icons painted by special masters at churches, printed images of saints became widespread at the end of the 19th century. Their production was not particularly expensive — lithographs on paper or metal plate were cheap. Also inexpensive was the tin revetment, a decorative cover. In the early 20th century, to save on production costs, tin revetments began to be replaced with foil ones, on which the faces of saints and depictions of saints and martyrs, hagiographic stories and biblical plots were printed.
The Museum Complex of Kuybyshev houses a similar printed image — the scene (“kleimo” — literally “mark, branding”) “St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian, St. John Chrysostom”. It is a fragment of an icon’s revetment, presumably a lectern one. The scene was stamped during the period of mass production of inexpensive “folk” icons at the beginning of the 20th century. However, the exact date and place of its printing is unknown.
The exhibit is a square plate made of metal foil. In its center is a depressed flat oval bordered by a relief frame with a “blade” pattern. In the center of the oval, a drawing is printed in black paint — a full-length frontal image of three male figures in episcopal vestments.
These are Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom — the greatest Christian prelates and hierarchs of orthodoxy, who are called the Fathers of the Church. All three became known for their huge contribution to the development of Christian doctrine and strengthening the position of faith.
On the right is Basil the Great. He was so called during his lifetime. Basil the Great left an impressive literary legacy, but the elaboration of the rite of liturgy, the main service of the Christian church, is considered his most major achievement.
In the center is Gregory the Theologian. In his teachings, he revealed the essence of the orthodox teaching about God, for which he was called the Theologian.
On the left is John Chrysostom. He continued the work of Basil the Great and created his own version of liturgy. He was called Chrysostom for the amazing beauty and persuasiveness of his sermons.
The figures of the saints tilt towards the center. Their episcopal vestments are decorated with large floral patterns, which is typical for the southern regions of Russia. Above the figures in the upper part of the oval is a partially preserved image of God the Father in the clouds.
