The large-scale canvas “In the Caucasus Mountains” was painted by Rustam Yakhikhanov. It is a genre scene, which introduces the viewer to the everyday routine of highlanders in the 18th–19th centuries.
In the painting, three men with a cart pulled by two massive oxen find themselves on a narrow slippery path near a precipice. They do their best to keep the cattle on the path and try not to fall down, otherwise, death is inevitable for all. The poses which Yakhikhanov chose for the characters, the perspective from above and the vertical composition, and the moderately cold tones accentuate the intense mood of the canvas. Far into the abyss, under the feet of the men, the artist depicted a narrow, cold mountain river.
Rustam Yakhikhanov was born on July 20, 1986, in Grozny, the capital of the Checheno-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In 2005, he entered the Faculty of Painting of the Repin Saint-Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied in the workshop of monumental painting under the tutorship of Alexander Bystrov. At this time, Yakhikhanov received a medal “For Academic Excellence” and his graduation work entitled “The Land of My Ancestors” was praised by the state certification committee.
In 2012, Rustam Yakhikhanov joined the Artists’ Union of Russia, and a year later he was awarded the medal “For Contributions to the Development of Culture” of the Ministry of Culture of the Chechen Republic. He participated in international artistic workshops and plein air events in Finland, China, Montenegro, at the “Senezh” rest house for artists, and in plein air events at the Ilya Repin Academic Dacha, held in Vyshny Volochyok, Tver Oblast.
In 2015, Yakhikhanov was awarded the Silver Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts for his successful artistic career. In 2016, he received the Silver Medal of Artists’ Union of Russia and in the same year — the title “Honored Artist of the Chechen Republic”.
Practically every Rustam Yakhikhanov’s work is dedicated to a national theme: customs and traditions, life and history of the Vainakh peoples — the Chechen and Ingush, peoples who speak Nakh languages. In 2017, the artist organized a large personal exhibition “The Crossroads of Memory” dedicated to the deportation of the Chechen and Ingush peoples to Central Asia with no right to return. Yakhikhanov presented 15 thematic canvases in the Memorial Complex of Victims of Repressions in Nazran.
Nowadays, the artist regularly takes part in national and international exhibitions, lives in St. Petersburg and teaches preparatory courses at the Ilya Repin Institute.
