In the early 17th century, a new independent genre of landscape painting emerged in Holland — the marine art. Instead of colorful paintings depicting naval battles, in which 16th–century artists focused on conveying ornate decorations of ships, they painted images of the sea itself. It was often a rough, stormy or covered with fog sea with sailing fishing boats.
Famous representatives of this genre include artists Ivan Aivazovsky, William Turner, Katsushika Hokusai, Leo Lagorio.
Dagestan artist Amirkhan Magomedov can also be considered a marine painter. The museum collection presents his painting “The Waves of the Caspian Sea”. His work is a view of the raging Caspian Sea from a rocky shore, with a flock of seagulls flying over it. The cloudy sky almost merges with the sea in the background. The murky green waves crash violently against the coastal rocks. He used predominantly blue, white and brown colors. The artist succeeded in conveying the full power and scale of nature through the play of light and shade.
Amirkhan Magomedov was born on February 5, 1964 in the Dagestan village of Shotota. From 1975 to 1980, he studied at the Khunzakh Art School. In 1990, he graduated from the Dagestan State Pedagogical University, Department of Graphic Arts. Magomedov participated in many national and regional exhibitions. In 1991, the artist began teaching.
His first personal exhibition was held in 1992. His paintings were exhibited in showrooms, galleries and museums. In 2003, Magomedov became a member of the Artists’ Union of Russia. A year later, he was awarded the Medal of the State Council of the Chechen Republic. Since 2005, Amirkhan Magomedov has been appointed the director of the Exhibition Hall of the Artists’ Union of Dagestan. In 2009, he received the honorary title “Merited Artist of the Republic of Dagestan”.
The painter has created about 200 works and had seven personal exhibitions. In 2010, he received the highest Russian award in painting — the silver medal of the State Prize in Fine Arts “Russian Gallery — 21st century” in the category “For the development of traditional national art in Russia”.
