Lev Feliksovich Lagorio
The painting “Sea View”
#2
The painting “Sea View” by the marine painter Lev Feliksovich Lagorio (1827-1905) came to the museum from the volost Executive Committee in 1927.
The author was born in Feodosia in the family of an Italian consul. Lev Lagorio graduated from the Feodosia Gymnasium. As a child, he took painting lessons from the most famous marine painter Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky. In 1843 Lev Lagorio entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1850, he graduated from his studies and, having accepted Russian citizenship, went on a trip abroad. For the Italian views created in 1853-1860, he got the title of professor of landscape painting.
The “Sea View” landscape is marked by the muted color characteristic of Lagorio and fine drawing of details. Above the dark blue sea water in the foreground and the entire right part of the picture, rises a steep, rocky shore, the slope of which is illuminated by the rays of the sun breaking through the clouds. The dark foreground of the painting gradually brightens and goes to the horizon. The landscape is painted on the contrast of dense shadows and the illuminated slope of the mountain range with the rays of the invisible sun outside the picture. The landscape is painted from the sea, as if from a ship sailing to the shore.
The artist has repeatedly painted this plot, constantly reproduced the characteristic features of the area. The landscape depicted in the painting “Sea View” is similar in composition to the canvas “On the Island of Capri. Coastal Cliffs” of 1859. It is kept in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. This allows us to assume that the picture we are considering was created in the same place of Italy and in the same period.
Born on the Black Sea coast, like his first teacher Aivazovsky, Lagorio was fascinated by seascapes from childhood. Throughout his life, he constantly turned to marine subjects, depicted them in various manifestations, conveyed all the greatness and significance of the moment. Lagorio painted every detail of the landscape with deep feeling, worked on each piece with the greatest care. For the artist, there were no secondary, meaningless details. Throughout his life, he was relatable to the sea, he dedicated to it many of his paintings.
Along with Aivazovsky, Lagorio is considered one of the most famous Russian marinists. The artist has always found nooks and crannies of nature. And the other countries he visited, he tried to show it from an unexpected view and give a novelty to the famous landscape. This is why the painting “Sea View” is interesting.
