The Murom History and Art Museum opened in 1919 in the mansion of merchants Zvorykins, a building of the mid-19th century. Today, the museum occupies five historical buildings in the center of Murom.
There are more than 100.000 items in the funds of the museum. The basis of the museum’s funds consists of collections of the famous Russian archaeologists — Count Alexey Uvarov and his wife Praskovia Uvarova — as well as an academician of painting Ivan Kulikov and Murom amateurs and collectors of antiquities.
In its halls, there are ancient Russian icons, applied artworks of local and capital masters of the 14th — 19th centuries, Western European paintings and graphics of the 16th — 19th centuries, as well as household items, which tell about the way of life of Murom citizens.
