Vasily Kandinsky is one of the founders and leading theorist of abstract art. The artist completely shook up the idea of painting, its shape, and its content. His main task was to visualize synthetic art, which would agglomerate painting, music, and drama.

Studying in Munich, Kandinsky sought himself in Expressionism and Fauvism, organized the ‘Phalanx’ group, and later the ‘Der Blaue Reiter’ (The Blue Rider). He worked on a theoretical grounding of abstractions. The result of these experiences was his book ‘On the Spiritual in Art.

“In it, the artist formulated his attitude to painting: “Painting is art, and art, on the whole, is not a meaningless creation of works blurring in emptiness, but a motivating force; it is designed to serve the development and improvement of the human soul… Painting is a language that speaks to our soul about its daily bread using its peculiar forms.”

The “Musical Overture. Violet Wedge” painting was written in Moscow in 1919. One of the most attractive and ambiguous paintings in the collection of Avant-Garde artwork at the Tula Museum of Fine Arts. The picture immerses the audience in an unknown world filled with music and color—the composition of different color spots and lines intersecting in space, forming the element of movement. “Painting is a thundering collision of different worlds, intended to create a new world in and from the struggle with one another, a new world which is the work of art. Each work originates just as does the cosmos. The creation of works of art is the creation of the world, ” the artist wrote.

Created in a difficult post-revolutionary time, the painting demonstrates excellent work by the artist to comprehend reality. It is a vivid image of confrontation, struggle of good and evil, harmony, and dissonance. So, the violet wedge that dissects a bright color space is like a cold and ruthless weapon, passionately destroying life.

The work belonged to the Moscow Museum of Pictorial Culture, where Kandinsky worked as a Director. The painting entered the Tula Museum of Fine Arts in 1926.
