Wassily Kandinsky
Improvisation No. 20
#8
#2
Wassily Kandinsky, one of the founders of abstract art, was born in Russia but worked in Germany and France for many years. His painting Improvisation No. 20 was created while Kandinsky, together with Franz Marc, founded “The Blue Rider” expressionist group. The artist interpreted his works as “impressions, " “improvisations, " and “compositions, " depending on the “distance” between the ready image and the first visual impressions or intellectual ideas.

“Improvisation”
#9
According to the artist’s opinion, an “improvisation” includes a more active involvement of fantasies, reassessment of an impression, and release of intuition. “Improvisation No. 20” is a colorful canvas where intense colorful splashes in beautiful combinations are crossed by curved lines.

“Painting is a rattling collision of different worlds that create a new world — a piece of art — through their conflict and inside of it. Every artwork is technically created like space: it evolves through catastrophes that serve as a chaotic orchestra sound, becoming a symphony, and that symphony is called the music of spheres. Creation of an artwork is the universe itself.”

About the most important task
#5
Kandinsky believed that the most important task in his creative work was to search for new ways to express spirituality and set it free from the materialness that the artist associated with “objectness”. In this painting, “objectness” (the motif of running horses) is almost overcome. Here, Kandinsky tried to move further into the sphere of abstracts and into the realm of pure art, where color and line interact directly, just as happens in music.

“Concerning the Spiritual in Art”
#4
In his book “Concerning the Spiritual in Art”, Kandinsky also declared that one of his main artistic principles of that period was the striving against nature in order to convey the transcendent essence of processes and objects.
