A friendly caricature of Tula artists Vasily Fomich Gilbert and Ivan Georgievich Rybakov is one of Porfiry Krylov’s early works. He created it at the age of 19, even before entering the painting department of Vkhutemas — Higher Art and Technical Workshops in Moscow.
At that time, the future famous artist worked at a warehouse of the Tula Cartridge Plant, where his father was a turner for many years. At the factory club, young Krylov, together with his comrades, created an art studio where he would eagerly study after work. Then, for the first time, he tried drawing a friendly caricature. The satirical genre largely determined the artist’s creative path.

Krylov’s story of how he first met with Gilbert and Rybakov from the book of
memoirs of the Kukryniksy “The Three of Us”. He did not reveal the names of the
artists, but the characters are easily recognizable by their descriptions:
