The Soviet artist Porfiry Nikitich Krylov most of all enjoyed working on children’s portraits. Alyonushka (Elena) is the artist’s granddaughter and daughter of his youngest son Anatoly. The artist painted her portraits at different ages — from infancy to adolescence. It is therefore no coincidence that the portrait of the one-year-old Alyonushka is among Krylov’s finest works and the painting “On the Balcony” depicts the artist’s wife reading a book to her granddaughter on a porch of their country house during a sunny summer day.

In the portrait on display, “Alyonushka” is only three years old, and growing up in a creative environment and looking at her famous grandfather and artist parents, she too became interested in drawing. The mood of the painting was accurately conveyed by the poet Nikolai Kolychev in his poem “The Artist”:

I am drawing
Things on paper, best I can:
At the top, now at the bottom,
On the right and on the left
Looking at me, looking pretty,
Squiggles, circles…
Because I’m drawing,
And I drew them on this paper.
Now it’s lunchtime,
Pencils broken…
I should ask my dear grandpa:
What is this that I have drawn?

Alyonushka is shown drawing not with ordinary pencils, but pastel crayons. Porfiry Krylov accurately conveyed the light velvety pastels in a child’s drawing using oil paints. A funny glove doll is next to the girl looking sad.

When Alyonushka grew up, she became a graphic artist and took part in exhibitions. Sadly, her artistic career never took off due to her very poor eyesight. After school, Elena Krylova left from Moscow to the Siberian city of Bratsk, to her mother. Two decades later, they moved together to the Ivanovo region, to the Noginskaya village. Portraits of Alyonushka as a child remained in Tula, the artist’s hometown.

People’s Artist of the USSR, academician, winner of five Stalin prizes and other state awards, Porfiry Krylov was also a member of the Kukryniksy — a group of Soviet artists. While collaborating with the Kukryniksy, he made satirical cartoons and caricatures in the newspaper “Pravda” and the magazine “Krokodil” (crocodile), propaganda posters, as well as illustrations for the works of Anton Chekhov, Maxim Gorky and Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin.
