In the exposition of the Severodvinsk Museum, you can see the photograph ‘Working Morning’ taken in the 1960s. The picture shows a heavy work flow, people are walking along the main street of the city — Lenin Avenue. Characteristic details tell about the place of their work, and about the features of the industrial city. There are only young people walking along the avenue. Sixty years ago, Molotovsk (as Severodvinsk was then called) was one of the youngest cities in the country, the average age of its residents did not exceed 30 years.

Since the founding of the city, men predominated among the workers — this is due to the fact that there are much more of them in the shipbuilding professions. Most of the women were at first housewives, but there were also eminent welders and workers of factory committees among them.

Young workers walk along the newly built smart street. Spectacular houses with columns still adorn Lenin Avenue. By carefully examining the clothes of the workers, one can easily figure out where they are working. On the left, workers in quilted jackets are marching in unison — locksmiths and machine operators are hurrying to the machine shops of the plant. Changing rooms in workshops appeared only in the 1970s, and before that time workers changed their clothes and washed themselves after work at home, most often in dormitories and communal apartment rooms. On the right side of the photo are young people in woolen coats — probably they are engineers and technicians, their workplace is in the plant management, where Lenin Avenue leads. Everyone has high boots on their feet — this is also a characteristic detail. The city is built on a swamp, and not until the 1960s did asphalt pavement appear on the streets, in the spring and autumn the streets turned into a barrier that could only be overcome with boots.

In the crowd, the figure of a former sailor in a naval overcoat is also noticeable. After serving in the Northern Fleet, many sailors became residents of Severodvinsk and joined the ranks of shipbuilders. In the background, hand in hand with moms and dads, kids are walking — they are being taken to kindergarten. Kindergartens and nurseries on Parkovaya Street, in the former ‘director’s cottages’, in the immediate vicinity of the factory entrance, are another feature of the city.
