David Teniers II (The Younger) is an outstanding 17th-century Flemish painter from Antwerp. His father, David Teniers the Elder, was also an artist, and his son received the first drawing and painting lessons from him. An important contribution to the success of David was made by his successful marriage to the daughter of the famous painter Jan Brueghel the Elder, Anne Brueghel. She was also an artist, a student of Peter Paul Rubens himself, and the marriage helped the young David Teniers win the patronage of the master, which later grew into a strong friendship.
In 1644, David Teniers the Younger took up a position in the Guild of Antwerp Artists (Guild of St. Luke) and gradually gained fame in local circles of artists and connoisseurs of painting. Among his most famous customers were King Philip IV of Spain and the Stadtholder of Holland, William II of Orange.
