Jacopo Vignali
Hagar and Angel in the Desert

Jacopo Vignali, an Italian painter and draftsman of the Baroque school, painted religious, mythological and literary subjects, worked in the mural technique, was an academician of the Florentine Academy of Arts, fulfilled orders from the Medici family. Altar images created by Vignali can be seen in many churches of Tuscany, and the artist’s paintings preserve in collections of the State Hermitage Museum, the State Museum of Fine Arts named after A.S. Pushkin and museums around the world.

The artist took the storyline for his painting “Hagar and the Angel in the Desert” from the Old Testament. The legend tells the story of the mythical ancestor of the Israeli people, Abraham, to whom in a dream the voice of God predicted that the Land of Canaan would become the birthplace of his descendants. However, Abraham did not have children, and his wife Sarah took a handmaid, the Egyptian Hagar, who became Abraham’s concubine. Soon, the oppressed mistress Hagar left Abraham’s house, wandered for a long time, but an angel appeared and ordered her to return. After returning, Hagar bore a son to Abraham and named him Ishmael.

Ferdinand Balthasar Bol (1616–1680). Hagar meets Angel in the Desert. 1650. Oil on canvas. National museum, Gdansk
Later, as legend says, Sarah gave birth to son Isaak. Abraham gave in to his wife’s insistence and repeatedly expelled Hagar and Ishmael. After long wanderings, the travelers ran out of water, but an angel appeared and pointed to the source.

The saved Ishmael is considered the ancestor of the Arab tribes, called the Ishmael and Hagarenes by his and his mother’s names. In Islam, this legend tells of Hajar, the second wife of Ibrahim, and her son Ishmael, who found the source of water, called Zamzam in the Mecca region and settled next to it.

Jacopo Vignali took the second part of the legend as the basis for the plot of the picture from the Penza Art Gallery. Although the painting does not contain a picture of a child, the sadness of a young woman, the empty vessel lying at her feet, and the pointing gesture of an angel’s hand confirm this story.

In his painting, Jacopo Vignali follows the path peculiar to the art of the new era, which sought to express tension, contrasts and movement. Large figures of Hagar and the angel occupy almost the entire space of the canvas, it seems that they are closely within the frames of the picture - part of the angel’s wing goes beyond its borders. Due to the shift of the group to the left, the composition seems unstable. The figures are located diagonally, guided by the angel’s raised left wing and the knot in the legs of Hagar.

In 1979, the Moscow publishing house “Graphic Arts” published a postcard depicting this painting by Jacopo Vignali with a circulation of 35 thousand copies and traveled by mail throughout Russia, enlightening the population.
