K. Tsiolkovsky
Astronomical drawing

Photocopies of astronomical blueprints and drawings, which Konstantin TsiolkOvsky created in Ryazan, were sent to the museum from the archives of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Based on these works, the author wrote his book ‘Dreams of the Earth and Sky’, in which he laid out his thoughts about various physical phenomena on the Earth and in the Universe, described a fictional interplanetary journey and prospects of human settlement in space

TsiolkOvsky is known throughout the world not only as the founder of the theory of space-rocket flight, but also as a polymath who was interested in a wide variety of subjects of natural history and technology, aviation and aeronautics, celestial mechanics, astronomy and even linguistics.

‘I don’t chase distinction, recognition or glory. I know that I have worked as hard as I could, and I am happy if my work was of any benefit to mankind’
Konstantin Tsiolkovsky

In Vyatka, before leaving for RyazAn, TsiolkOvsky studied Newton’s ‘Mathematical Principles Of Natural Philosophy’. This book introduced him to celestial mechanics. In RyazAn, TsiolkOvsky drew diagrams of the solar system and diligently delineated the orbits of the planets. ‘Astronomy has fascinated me, - he wrote later, - because I have believed and believe now that not only the Earth, but also the Universe is the heritage of human progeny’.

It was in Ryazan that Tsiolkovsky approached the answer to a question that he once asked himself: ‘Can you invent a machine that will help one rise to the heavenly spaces? ’ When he was 21, he made an extensive table of his observations and calculations, where he depicted different planets, recorded the gravity of mass on the planet’s surface, the time of the spin around the axis, the speed of the equatorial points, surface area, volume and mass of the celestial body.

On the sheets covered up and down with drawings and formulas TsiolkOvsky meditated on many things -- phenomena on the pendulum and swings, a train carriage that starts or finishes its movement, a cannon ball, where “increased heaviness” arises. He was concerned about how the living things will tolerate the “increased heaviness”. And Konstantin TsiolkOvsky built a centrifugal machine out of a barrel -- the precursor of those centrifuges on which astronauts train today -- and experimented with chickens. “I increased their weight 5 times using the centrifugal machine. They did not get harmed in the slightest”, - he later wrote in the autobiography.

The themes of his astronomical drawings are: zero gravity and G force, “spindle-shaped, hanging without support above the planet and not falling due to centrifugal force” (easily recognizable as an artificial satellite), and “rings surrounding the planet without atmosphere, with the help of which it is possible to ascend to the heavens and to descend from them, as well as to go on a space travel”.
