One of the illustrations of Sergey Vladimirovich Filenko, housed by the Mikhail Lermontov State Museum-Reserve, is titled “And the procession, sad and slow, Moves on, three days and nights to go…”. For this work, the artist chose tempera, watercolor, and ink.
This graphic work is part of the cycle, which Sergey Filenko dedicated to Mikhail Lermontov’s poem “Demon”. Two other illustrations from the museum’s collection are titled “Compelling eyes her vision searing scorched her…” and “From lofty cliff that castle lowered Grim, silent, motionless alway…”
According to Filenko’s artistic vision, these illustrations are united by a common theme and they also feature lines from Mikhail Lermontov’s poetry at the bottom of each page. For this, the artist chose an old font, which can be found in the works of Ivan Bilibin, a famous illustrator of fairy tales.
In this 2012 work, Sergey Filenko created a gloomy nightscape. The center of the narrative in this horizontal composition is shifted to the lower right corner. The artist depicted a funeral procession going through the mountain ledges of a deep gorge.
The moon is nowhere in sight, however, the distant snowy peaks of the mountains viewed in the background reflect its light and thereby hint at its presence. The procession moves from left to right towards the final destination — the church on top of the granite rocks.
In this work, the artist addressed the following lines of Mikhail Lermontov:
