In the 1970s, the museum staff came up with the idea to create a new exhibition that would allow the visitors to access all the greatest exhibits housed by the museum. It was decided to organize it in the house that used to belong to I.V. Umanov.
Throughout 1841, Mikhail Lermontov visited this house numerous times. At that time, Alexander Arnoldi, his comrade-in-arms in the Grodno Hussar Regiment, lived there.
The house was restored, the later extensions were removed to return the house to its former state and, above all, a spacious wooden veranda was brought back. The new exhibition opened in 1979.
The museum managed to gather a unique collection of illustrations for Lermontov’s books. It includes the works of Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel, Ilya Repin, Boris Kustodiev, Ivan Bilibin, Konstantin Rudakov, and Tatyana Mavrina.
The Mikhail Lermontov State Museum-Reserve still receives new items for its collection. The museum also exhibits works by 21st-century artists.
Exhibits are marked with AR stickers for identification purposes.
