Sergey Vladimirovich Filenko was born in 1962. He graduated from the Department of Industrial Graphic Design of the Donetsk Art College. After serving in the army, he entered the Moscow film school VGIK, known at that time as the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. In 1989, he defended his thesis and graduated as an art director of feature films.
Sergey Filenko is an easel painter, art director, and illustrator of Russian literature. He created a series of illustrations for the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky and Mikhail Bulgakov and a series of graphic drawings for Timur Pulatov’s philosophical novel “Tarazi’s Turtle”.
In his illustrations for the works titled “A Hero of Our Time” and “Demon”, as well as the graphic drawings for the poem “The Novice”, Sergey Filenko managed to create an integral and harmonious world of Lermontov’s works.
Portraits of literary characters are among the most difficult to create since every reader has their own idea of Pechorin, the Novice, the Demon, and Tamara. The readers’ expectations can also be based on what they have seen before and what they are already accustomed to while reading Mikhail Lermontov’s works illustrated by classical artists, for example, Nikolai Ilyin.
Sergey Filenko is characterized by sharp and vigilant observation skills and his ability to see real people in literary characters with all their psychological complexity. The landscapes in the illustrations for Mikhail Lermontov’s poem “Demon” create a powerful symphony of passion, longing, space, and abyss. Tamara and the Demon are portrayed against an inhomogeneous, neutrally colored background.
The artist masterfully reflected the forces of nature, the unfathomable heavenly world, and the fires of passion: he imbued the image of the characters with inner strength and emotional tension. The drawing in general is distinguished by the beautiful manner of painting and the integral and concise horizontal composition. The story develops diagonally from the upper left corner to the lower right one, adding tension and dynamics to the whole drawing.
