The museum houses a women’s jacket made of gray-green cloth — a well-preserved example of fashionable clothes of the early 20th century. The single-breasted and close-fitting jacket with an intricate design has long sleeves and a turn-down collar. The collar, sides and bottom edge of the jacket are trimmed with two parallel narrow strips of silk fabric. The lining is also made of silk. The label bears the trademark “Sh.M. Overstein. Tyumen”.
The Overstein ready-made dress store was located in Tyumen at 22 Tsarskaya and 19 Voinovskaya Street. In the early 20th century, the house, in which the store was located, was bought by Shlyoma Mendelevich and Havva Davydovna Overstein from the citizen Rozov. The couple rebuilt this brick two-story building. The first floor included living rooms and tailoring workshops, and the second was allocated to the Tyumen branch of the Russian Bank for foreign trade.
The tailor Shlyoma Mendelevich Overstein was born in Tyumen around 1861/62. His father Mendel Zelmanovich was most likely an exiled settler. Shlyoma Mendelevich himself did not receive any special education and worked as a tailor all his life. In 1910, he published an advertisement in the guidebook “All Tyumen”, in which he addressed the potential buyers of the store on Tsarskaya Street with the following message: “Always, for all seasons, we have a huge selection of men’s, women’s and children’s ready-made dresses, as well as fur and cloth goods from Russian and foreign companies. Furs, cloth, wool and leotards of fashionable elegant patterns for taking orders under the experienced supervision of the famous tailor N.M. Baranov. We offer excellent fast service. With respect, Sh. Overstein.” The advert also indicated that Overstein’s store is among the few where “prices are moderate.” The shop was open from eight in the morning to seven in the evening on all days except Sundays. It was a successful business. In 1907, the company’s income was 7,000 rubles.
Shlyoma Mendelevich was married to Havva Davydovna. They were the same age and had several children. Despite being constantly busy, the spouses were actively involved in the Jewish community. For example, they had a mikveh built in the Lyaminsky ravine together with the merchant Joseph Khaimovich Brant. The store closed during the Russian Civil War.
