Arbi Rassukhanov painted Female Portrait in 1993. He depicted a Chechen maiden in the national attire – glabli. In the costumes of Chechen and Ingush women gold and silver jewelry played an instrumental role. The gala dress on the picture is decorated with metal chest-type fasteners. They are called tyidargash. Of no less importance are a metal belt and a Caucasian headdress, which is covered by a shawl.
The master not only carefully portrayed the costume details but also skillfully conveyed the mood of the heroine. The face of the maiden, her tilting head and the overall posture express the state of dreaminess. However, a dark-brown background of the canvas discords with the maiden’s bright image.
The artist’s creativity is poorly studied. Regretfully, only a small portion of his works has survived till out times. The fate of the creative legacy of Arbi Rassukhanov experienced a tragic path due to hostilities on the territory of the Chechen Republic. During the first military operation in December 1994 and January 1995 in the city of Grozny a multitude of cultural centers were destroyed. Among them were art museums. It was that very period when picturesque and graphic works of Arbi Rassukhanov were lost.
The master survived through this tragedy in fortitude and again embarked on creativity. Over three years he created several dozens of art works. However, they suffered a similar horrible fate as the first pictures. During the second military operation new pieces of art were also extinguished. After such a blow the artist fell seriously ill. In 2000 he died in his native city of Shali.
The preserved works enable to judge about the genuine craftsmanship of the author. He was an artist of academic school of painting. The academic manner assumes a precise anatomic drawing of a human figure, observation of a linear perspective and modeling of light and shadow volumes. Arbi Rassukhanov was enrolled to the department of easel painting of the Russian Academy of Arts in 1972. In Leningrad his painting teacher was Yury Neprintsev. Under his guidance, Rassukhanov performed a diploma work Women of Chechen-Ingushetia. Arbi Rassukhanov often depicted female images in the national attire. Female Portrait is one of the surviving works of the artist.
