National Museum of the Chechen Republic is one of the oldest museums in the republic. It was founded in 1924. Over the 20th century, its name changed several times. Also, some museums were united to form one common structure. By the 1990s, the collection of the united museum had more than 230 thousand items.

In 1994–1996 and 1999–2000, military operations took place in the Chechen Republic. Up to 90% of the collection was lost. After the military conflicts, the museum restoration began.

As of 2019, the museum has over 36,000 storage units. An important part of the collection is paintings and drawings by famous artists from different countries. Among them are Peter van Bredal, Vasily Tropinin, Peter Zakharov-Chechenets.
