Jurgis Preiss painted this small portrait of artist Aria Dimze in 1949. At that time, he lived in Tomsk, where he and his wife had been sent after the outbreak of the war. Several times the artist travelled from Siberia to the Latvian city of Dzintari, where he got acquainted with Aria Dimze. Preiss created a lot of her portraits — Aria, Aria at the Piano, Aria in a Coat and others. However, the plein-air sketch Female Portrait became the only image in this series that the artist painted in oil.
Preiss portrayed Dimze against the sea and a cloudy sky. For this picture, he chose a soft, dull colour scheme, in which warm shades prevail. The wide free brushstrokes, which the artist applied in different directions, gave the picture dynamism, a feeling of lightness and air. The model’s hair has come out from under her shawl and are slightly dishevelled, the flaps of the clothes are fluttering in the wind. Aria Dimze in the picture looks like she didn’t pose for the artist on purpose, rather briefly stopped in front of him and was going to move on.
