Jurgis Preiss
Berlin Sketches. Female Portrait (Sabine Krug)
#2
From October 1963 to April 1965, artist Jurgis Preiss lived and worked in Berlin. There, he executed commissioned portraits of German actresses who served at the Maxim Gorky Theatre – Helene Weigel and Sabine Krug.

‘I was at the Ministry of Culture today, and I was sent to the City Executive Committee, to a woman in the department of culture. She invited me to create a portrait of a famous actress from the Gorky Theatre…’
From a letter by Jurgis Preiss

While working on the portrait, Preiss created several preliminary sketches in various techniques — with a brush, a marker pen, and coloured pencils. One of these sketches is kept in the Kemerovo Regional Museum of Fine Arts. ‘They commissioned me a portrait of an actress in Berlin. From photographs, it was possible to choose the most interesting face. I chose her. She posed in a white sweater, in a bright yellow skirt. So beautiful against the window, through which one could see a chestnut tree! She was very fond of flowering chestnuts…’
From the memoirs of Jurgis Preiss

In this sketch, Preiss retained a resemblance to Sabine Krug, but portrayed the actress in an emphatically eccentric style, with sharp and pointed features. This quick sketch made with a marker pen resembles a cartoon.I

The portrait shows the influence of German expressionist artists. Preiss drew it with clear broken lines, which are characteristic of this style. He outlined with the hair and clothes of the actress, the folds and shadows with rough hatching. The curved line of the lips, the asymmetrical eyes and eyebrows give a surprised and tragic expression to the model’s face.

Sabine Krug was one of the most famous actresses at the Gorky Theatre. She became famous for the role of Nastya in Maxim Gorky’s play The Lower Depths. In 1965, the actress died in a car accident.

Jurgis Preiss created two painted portraits of Sabine Krug. For the first, the actress herself sat for him; the second one was painted by the artist later, from memory. One of these portraits remained in Germany. The other is kept in the collection of Kemerovo resident Lyudmila Biryukova, the adopted daughter and heiress of the artist. Biryukova more than once presented works by Preiss to the Kemerovo Regional Museum of Fine Arts. She donated the sketch for the portrait of Sabine Krug to the exposition in 2001.
