Stanislav Mikhailovich Nikireyev (1932–2007) was born in Michurinsk, Tambov Oblast. In 1957, he graduated from the Savitsky Penza Art School. The artist recalled,
Apple Trees are Blooming
I graduated from school and immediately, the next day, I went to Moscow, to the Surikov Institute. I would have graduated earlier, but I was drafted into the army.
At the Surikov Moscow Art Institute, Nikereyev studied easel graphics in the workshop of Evgeny Adolfovich Kibrik and etching in the workshop of Mikhail Nikolaevich Alexich. Stanislav Mikhailovich graduated in 1963.
In his work, the artist combined micro-engraving (that is, the rendering of the smallest details) with a large surface of the sheet. Larisa Alekseevna Davydova, an Honored Artist of Russia, and Grigory Ivanovich Saamov, a member of the Union of Writers of Russia, noted in the 2006 publication “The Great Artist from Podolsk” about Nikereyev,Today there is no other graphic artist in Russia who could be compared to him. And he is one of the best in the world. This is not only our emotional opinion, this is the opinion of professionals, the opinion of everyone who is familiar with the work of this amazing artist. His extraordinary works are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery and in other leading galleries and museums of the world.
Stanislav Mikhailovich Nikireyev himself noted,
I have not invented any unprecedented method of work, the one I follow is called, as before, Realism. My external graphic techniques are also traditional, especially in the composition of the plot. But in developing the surface of the depicted objects, the environment, the details, I gradually came to the point that now I have the right to consider this manner my own.
The subject of Stanislav Nikireyev’s works is simple. He shows everyone the familiar: fields and roads, puddles and ravines, familiar urban and suburban landscapes. The plot of the etching “Apple Trees are Blooming” is also rather simple. The viewer can see a corner of the yard, a house with shutters, a vegetable garden, where the hostess of the house is doing some spring chores. This simplicity, combined with the artist’s deep love for his native nature and for life itself, produced an amazing, fascinating effect.
The artist Demyan Mikhailovich Utenkov remarked,It is hard to believe that after Durer and in general after the entire epoch of classical engraving, a person can go ‘one-on-one’ with the great masters of the past and with the same type of weapon… withstand this fight, that is, stand side by side as an equal.
