More than 34000 citizens lived in Pokrovsk in 1926 according to the national census, but the town hospital networks didn’t meet the needs of the population. It was agreed to start the construction of the hospital premises in the highland non-flooded part of the town. A new purpose-built part of the building had an appropriate size, a heating system and it met all hygienic requirements. Supervised by August Petrovich Siebengar, the chief medical officer, the surgical wing construction started and was put in commission on time in 1936. As the chief medical officer, Siebengar was actively engaged in the establishment of the Blood Transfusion Institute, holding of practical scientific conferences, construction of new hospital buildings etc. A trained surgeon, he performed special operations. So, in April of 1936, cancer destroyed the half of a young girl’s face. Siebengar reconstructed her face by a skin graft, the face perfectly healed. The one-of-a kind operation was conducted in the surgical wing of the 2nd municipal hospital. It was in all local newspapers.A new modern hospital building was built in 1996.

August Petrovich Siebengar (1888-1938)
A native of the Volga German colonists, he was born in the village of Kamenka, Saratov province. Professor and surgeon, he was the Chief medical officer of the 2nd municipal hospital in Pokrovsk/Engels (the capital of the ASSR NP). On June 28, 1938, August Siebengar was arrested. On October 27 he was sentenced to death on charges of ‘participating in an anti-Soviet terrorist and sabotage organization’. On the same day he was executed. He was posthumously rehabilitated on April 4, 1957. It’s a pity to have lost such a person, a doctor, a scientist.
