The history of the German drama theatre is closely connected with the traditions and creative work of the Russian drama, founded in 1919. But the German population longed for establishing their national art center. They started to discuss the opening of the German drama in 1925, after Pokrovsk became the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Volga Germans in 1924. In the summer of 1931, the 2nd session of the CEC (Central Executive Committee) of the Republic of Volga Germans paid special attention to the art issue, noting that ‘the national art lags behind the nation building’, and so, ruled to organize the German national theater. The former ‘Awakening’ cinema was reconstructed. Later, this building also housed the Ukrainian Theatre Company, the German Philharmonic (Nemgosfilarmonia), the Theatre of Musical Comedy, the Puppet Theatre and a music school…The German theatre troupe of 18 artists rehearsed in apartments and went on tour to the Republic towns and cantons, welcomed by local residents. They also gave concerts in fields and collective farms. in November 1932, after the theatre reconstruction, the troupe went on stage. They had to solve a lot of problems  during the work. The actors were dissatisfied with the fact that they were not recognized as the main theatre cast. The development of the young theatre company was compromised by the lack of the head of the literary department, who could train artists for the national theater. Later, Andreas Sachs, a famous playwright and a member of the Writers' Union, was invited to the post, and the shows improved. Henrikh Zavatsky, a famous writer and director, began to cooperate with the theatre. The company worked on the best Russian and Western European classics, striving for the skills of the main national theatres. Gradually, the German State Drama Theater (Nemgosteater) became known all over the country. The company often went on tour to major cities. The Great Patriotic War dashed all those creative plans. On July 27, 1941, the entire theatre troupe and the staff of the German nationality were suspended from work.
