The work ‘Meeting with Mother " was created by Alexander Ignatiev, founder of the Valuy Museum of Fine Arts, People’s artist of the Kyrgyz SSR, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts, laureate of the State Prize of the Kyrgyz SSR named after Toktogul.
The future painter was born in the town of Valuyki, Belgorod region. He has been depicting his home and historical monuments on paper from a young age. But most of all, the amateur artist loved to paint nature. It influenced him to make a choice in favor of his creative path for future.
During his professional career, Alexander Ignatiev wrote over a hundred works that are in the collections of the top museums in Russia. One of his paintings was purchased by the State Tretyakov Gallery.
There are more than 30 works of the master in the holdings of the Valuy Museum of History and Art. The features of Alexander Ignatiev’s painting include a vivid sense of color, competent composition of paintings, as well as a large brush stroke.
‘Meeting with Mother’ by Alexander Ignatiev is one of the earliest and most famous of his paintings. He created it in 1942, when Valuyki was occupied by Nazi invaders. It was trying times for all the residents of the town, who felt all the cruelty and hatred of the enemy towards the Russian people. The painter, who was far from his native town, felt even at a distance how difficult it was for his townsmen. Moreover, Sergei, Alexander Ignatiev’s younger brother, participated in the liberation battles of the Great Patriotic War, so the theme of the war was close to him. He transferred all his thoughts and experiences on canvas.
The artist himself did not have a chance to fight, but he was deeply concerned about all the military events. On the second day of the war, he created “Be vigilant. Be on guard to protect the fields!” posters. Also soon, at the Ignatiev’s initiative, the Kyrgyz artists began to produce ‘Kir TAG OKNA’, which played an important propaganda role.
On ‘Meeting with Mother’, the artist depicted a touching moment when a soldier who returned from the battlefield met with his family. He embraced his mother, who fell on his chest sobbing with joy. You can’t see her face, but look at the eyes of the fighter, full of tears, looking at the audience.
Alexander Ignatiev created “Meeting with Mother” in his impressionistic manner: a broad brush stroke and blurred outlines. Here, you can also see the author’s color scheme, which consists of greenish-blue and ochre shades.
