Torc is a hoop-shaped neck ornament. This torc was found in 1976 in a burial mound in Rostov oblast next to Sladkovsky village. The torc is made of a silver rod, circular in section. The rod is flattened at the end in such a way that it becomes rectangular in section.

The torc is shaped as a ring — a circle, which, according to the legends, separated the owner from the external world. Ancient people believed that amulets shaped like that had magic protective powers, they safeguarded from evil forces not only the person but the person’s family and the entire tribe. Both women and men wore gold torcs in the Scythian Epoch. Apart from ornaments, women’s burials of the IV century BC contained weapons and ritual items. Archeological excavations confirm the information of ancient authors that women of that time participated in wars along with men and made sacrifices.

Mound 4 of Sladkovsky mound burial, where the torc was found, turned out to be a large family burial. Several people — adults and children — were buried there at the same time. The burial was partially looted in the ancient time. In the preserved south-eastern part of the burial archeologists found a buried adult woman, whose neck was embellished by the silver spiral torc. On her right wrist, there was a bracelet of beads, standing out among them were amphora-shaped translucent glass beads. The collar and chest parts of her garment were also decorated with small beads, mainly of yellow non-transparent glass. The ‘amazon’ had full complement of armament with her: spearheads, an iron sword, a quiver full of arrows with iron and bronze arrowheads. There is no doubt that the woman’s burial was central in the mound. It became one of the brightest burial examples of the Don “amazons”.
