View from the chalk mountains

The collection of the Urazovo Local History Museum holds a painting ‘View from the Chalk Mountains’. It was painted by of Nikolay Ivanov, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, a teacher of drawing at the Urazovo school.

Nikolay Ivanov is a native of the Kursk region. He was born on December 10, 1926. In 1943, at the age of 17, Ivanov went off to serve at the front. There he was a gunner in a self-propelled artillery regiment. For Battle Merit Nikolay Ivanov was awarded the Medal ‘For Courage’. In 1943, he was severely wounded in the leg and was demobilized.

In 1952 Nikolay Ivanov graduated from the Kursk Art and Graphic School. Then he received a job referral as a drawing teacher in the settlement of Urazovo, Kursk region. For more than 30 years Ivanov taught children. During this time he graduated from the graphic arts faculty of the Moscow Pedagogical Institute. For his many years of work, he was awarded many times with certificates and diplomas. In 1965 Nikolay Ivanov received a Certificate of honor from the Ministry of Education of the RSFSR.

After retirement, Ivanov continued to work. From 1983 to 1990, he taught in the art class of the Urazovo children’s art school. Nikolay Ivanov worked in different techniques: watercolor, pastel, etching. He also created self-portraits, portraits of his friends, acquaintances and fellow villagers, as well as landscapes of his native places at different times of the year.

The painting “View from the Chalk Mountains” was created by Nikolay Ivanov in 1983. He depicted a frozen winter nature on it, which is transforming and changing right before our eyes. All living things are striving towards the light and warmth, growing and developing. Nature at this time is an amazing sight. And those who want to enjoy the greatness of the force of nature and see with their own eyes how the arrival of spring destroys the winter shackles should closely examine Ivanov’s painting. The entire surface of the river comes to life, begins to move, and at this moment, looking at the full-flowing and mighty river, you understand that the force of nature is the irresistible will of nature itself, with which it is impossible to fight. Also on the canvas you can see a small boat that neatly landed on the shore, thawed roads and in the distance the outlines of the settlement of Urazovo.

Light shades prevail on the canvas: white, blue, yellow, light brown. These colors add a special flavor to the landscape. When you look at a picture, you want to watch and find new details that complement its general content. The artist managed to convey the spring mood of nature, depict the flood of the Oskol River in all its beauty and give life to a static landscape.
