Pieter van Bredael painted the picture Port View in the 17th century. This work is typical of the artist — many of his artworks are distinguished by multi-figured compositions with careful drawing of details.
In the painting is captured Italian city of Livorno – the largest port of Tuscany. The artist depicted sailors, who are unloading a ship. Vacationing tradesmen in variegated clothes are seen nearby. Pieter van Bredael painted the light blue sea in the background. He filled upper part of the canvas with the image of sky before sunset with pink clouds.
A monument to Duke Ferdinand I Medici is disposed in the center of the composition. The monument is adorned with the sculptural group Four Moors. That memorial is a real symbol and visiting card of seaside Livorno. An intensive construction of new urban areas was during the reign of Ferdinando I. The monument symbolised revival of the port and emphasised the duke’s influence on the urban appearance.
Pieter van Bredael is Flemish baroque artist. He is mainly famous of paintings on the theme of Roman cattle-breeding markets. He often depicted this plot in Italian pastoral landscapes or against the backdrop of ancient ruins. He also drew genre scenes on the theme of contemporary urban life — village festivals, carnival processions, comedy del arte in the squares. Many researchers note that the manner of artist’s painting is similar to Jan Brueghel.
The best pictures of the artist are in Belgian city Ghent. His artworks are also presented at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Art in Moscow.
Port View is the only artwork by Pieter van Bredael in National Museum of the Chechen Republic collection. It was donated to the museum in 1965 among other painting that the capital’s museums allocated from their storerooms. During military operations in the Chechen Republic in 1994–1995, the picture suffered. In 1995 it was transferred for the restoration to The Grabar Art Conversation Center in Moscow. In 2014 the canvas was given back. Now Port View is in the permanent exhibition of the museum.
